It is quite likely to be a contributing factor. I wonder if I was turned away by the bad reviews? Possibly. I watched it waaaaay after the fact on VHS, and we had the same reaction. The opening is light, the middle funny, and the finale weirdly mismatched to the rest of the movie. I wouldn't mind seeing it again now. Nostalgia for the ones we've since lost alone would warrant another viewing.
